The Birth of the Charging Across America Challenge 2022

Rob Swartz has a simple mission statement for each of his motorcycle businesses, “Make every client’s next ride their best one.” He is often referred to as the “motorcycle marriage counselor” since his client’s most frequent compliment is, “You made me fall in love with my bike all over again.”

Swartz was eight when his father’s friend taught him how to drive a 1925 Model T and said, “Take some laps kid.” Barely able to grasp both sides of the steering wheel or reach the pedals, Swartz proceeded to do exactly as instructed, driving countless circles around a rural airfield till the Speedster’s tank ran dry.

An Interview With Rob Swartz, Charging Across America Challenge 2022 Creator

On Do you like a challenge? Plenty of riders do, but it takes a special kind of rider to plot a cross-country trip on an electric bike at the beginning of April. That was the plan behind the Charging Across America Challenge in April, 2022, though.

The premise seems simple enough on paper: Two Energica riders would crisscross the U.S., riding the traditional Cannonball route between the Red Ball Garage in NYC and the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, California. One would start on the East Coast, and one on the West Coast. As a cherry on top, they’d complete their ride on Earth Day. What could go wrong?

An Interview With New Electric Motorcycle Cannonball Record-Setter Steven Day

On April 18, 2022, the Charging Across America Challenge set off from both the East and West Coasts. Two Energica riders, both alike in dignity (but nowhere near Verona) decided to crisscross the country along the historic Cannonball route. Event organizer and rider Rob Swartz and his EVA EsseEsse 9 would start in New York City and ride to Redondo Beach, California, while rider Steven Day and his EVA Ribelle would do exactly the opposite. If things went according to plan, they’d meet up briefly at a charging stop in the middle. Both riders would complete their journeys on April 22, 2022—Earth Day.
