ROB'S DYNO SERVICE

BRETT GUYER

BRETT'S 2009 SEASON SUMMARY

The season got of to an easy start as I had no new bike to prepare for racing. This makes the new season seem easy; just the normal updates and small modifications. I installed Marchesini forged wheels front and rear. The rear is a 6.0” and is .25” larger than the old 5.5” Marvics. This was done to aid in the traction and tire wear department. While I was at it, I machined all custom brackets and wheel spacers to enable quick rear wheel changes. 30 seconds for a rear tire swap with no falling spacers would come in handy during the racing season as you never know when you are going to need a fresh tire fast.

I installed a Termignoni pipe to replace the side mount Shark pipe I had been grinding on the ground most of last season. A full clutch rebuild was performed to start the season off as these slipper clutches get a lot of work and wear out after about four race weekends. At this point, April is about here, and it’s time to go racing.

My Rob’s Dyno experience started at New Hampshire International Speedway when Rob arrived with his new transportable dyno. I had ten years of racing experience at this time and had known of many guys who offered dyno work. Rob was just getting his feet wet in something he seemed to love to do. I closely watched him interact with customers and solicit new customers for his dyno work. Weekend after weekend he was at the track dyno-ing more and more bikes and soliciting more work.

He approached me in the beginning of the ‘05 season offering his services with my ‘03 Ducati SS 1000. I had installed a Power Commander myself and installed a standard map. I had taken the bike to another bike shop that I had dealt with for years, done some dyno runs, modified the standard map to gain some horsepower and I was generally happy with the results. The SS put out 85 Hp in stock form and 91 Hp when all was said and done. The 2005 season was a learning experience for me as I hadn’t owned a Ducati in the past. Although, I think I’ve owned and raced just about everything else.

Rob came to me again that season and mentioned that he had seen some of my races and thought if he could squeeze a little more out of my bike it might help me go faster and win more money. I declined Rob’s help once again stating that the bike made 91 Hp and that the bike’s handling needed more attention to obtain more speed. Rob went back to his dyno work with other customers and was pleasing many of them with gains in horsepower and mapping that produced smooth power delivery. Rob had quickly become the expert in dyno service at N.H.I.S.

More and more of the top guys at the track were coming to me saying that his work had pleased them and that they would recommend him to anyone. Still, I was all set in that department – or so I thought. The 2005 season came to an end and I had come up short on a couple of championships… I thought maybe next year I would let Rob work on my bike to help my attempt at the 2006 championships.

For the 2006 season, I had purchased a new Ducati SS 1000 and was again racing for more contingency money and championships. The bike made 91 Hp with the Power Commander and pipes from the old bike installed. Rob dyno-ed the bike and improved that to 95 Hp. I rode the bike to many wins including the Thunderbike win at the Loudon Classic. I was sold on Rob’s work now; the bike was smooth off the corners with its delivery of power and was real strong down the straights.

Heated battles developed in all of the classes, and at mid season, I felt it was time to build the motor to get that extra edge on the competition. I had the typical stuff done: big bore, cams, and some porting work to help the Ducati breathe.

Rob took the bike and spent 3 hours on an advanced map and was able to get the bike up to 108 Hp. The last half of the season was looking really good with the modifications and his dyno work.

Finally, with Rob’s help, I went on to go faster than I had ever gone on the Ducati and to win two championships. Rob’s help was instrumental in these accomplishments and I would recommend his work to anyone, even the guy who thinks he has it covered as I did in ’05.

This year, I’m happy to be one of Rob’s Dyno sponsored riders.
